Frequently Asked Questions

This is my first treatment what should i expect?

For the first appointment, you will be given a client consultation form to fill in outlining any medical conditions, doctors’ details, plus any contra-indications etc.

If you are having a sports massage treatment, you will also undergo a postural assessment and some range of movement tests.

Your therapist will also consult with you about what your immediate concerns are in relation to you seeking a massage.

Goals can be set together about a treatment plan that can address your needs in the short, medium and long term.

What are contraindications and do i need consent from my GP?

As part of the initial consultation any local or general contra-indications will be identified, as well as any medical conditions that might mean massage is not suitable. In the event of anything preventing treatment, medical consent will then be sought before proceeding.

Local contra-indications are things like bruises, verrucae and recent scar tissue, these would not prevent treatment, but caution will be taken to avoid the area. Examples of general contra-indications are colds or the flu virus; high blood pressure; and the first trimester of pregnancy with general contra-indications treatment can only take place with medical consent from your GP or other Medical Practitioner.

What should i wear?  Will my privacy be respected?

Every effort is made to maintain your modesty and comfort throughout the treatment. For sports massage underwear or shorts should be worn at all times and ladies may be asked to remove their bras depending on the area to be treated. For the postural assessment it is good to bring along shorts or the type of underwear you would be comfortable wearing to the swimming pool or beach. It is also advised not to wear anything which could be easily stained from oils or creams used.

Before the treatment begins your therapist will leave the room and you will have privacy while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean towel and blanket. Only parts of the body that are being treated are exposed, and towels or blankets are used for covering the body and to keep you warm and comfortable.  After the treatment, your therapist will leave the room again while you get dressed. They will either be waiting for you outside the treatment room when you are ready or will politely knock to come back into the room.  For our chair massage therapy, the client can remain fully dressed, if deeper work is required the client may be asked to wear a sports bra or a top they feel comfortable in which will expose the shoulder and back area.

How long is a massage session?

The majority of treatments last 1 hour, we endeavour to give you that hour on the table or chair receiving the treatment, so for your first treatment you can expect to be in the clinic for about 90 minutes and for subsequent sessions about 75 minutes.

What should I do during my massage?

It is important that you are comfortable throughout the treatment. Your therapist will either move you or tell you what is needed throughout the treatment.

Some people like to close their eyes and relax, while others like to talk during their treatment. You can ask your therapist questions about the massage or the particular technique you are receiving.

If you are finding the pressure used too much or too little, please feel free to ask your therapist to alter this.  Also if you feel too hot or too cold or your positioning is not right please feel free to inform your therapist so you can remain comfortable while on the table or chair.

How will i feel after my massage?

The majority of people feel relaxed and relieved; some can get freedom from pain or tension and have increased range of motion.

Since toxins are released from your muscle tissue during a massage, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water following post treatment so the toxins can be flushed from your bloodstream, rather than reabsorbed into your muscles.

It is not uncommon to feel some mild soreness after a massage, especially after a deeper massage, this usually goes away after a few days.

Does Kinetic Fit treat minors under 18 years old?

Yes, we can treat young people under the age of 18 but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at each appointment.
